Match Report

Croatia secure a spot in EuroVolley 1/8 finals

Article 28 August 2019

Almost 4000 spectators attended the game in Papp László Sportaréna. Both teams opened the game nervously, making a lot of mistakes but the Croatians – led by their captain Samanta FABRIS – managed to gain a major advantage at 16-12 and followed this to 21-15, eventually taking the opening set.

The next set was full of up and downs: the Croats led by  21-16, but the hosts totally reduced the gap and tied at 21-21. With two mistakes, Hungary lost their chance once Karla KLARIC used the first set point.

The third and final set brought the biggest drama. The hosts took an early lead at 8-5 and kept their advantage to 16-11, but with several great actions from the Croatian side, the score was tied at 22-22 where the thrilling battle started. The Hungarians saved five match points – and wasted 5 set points as well. Every action was full of tension and both sides did literally their best. Both coaches asked for challenges for 3 times after 23-23. Croatians claimed the victory which gives them a spot in the EuroVolley 1/8 finals.

Samanta FABRIS was the best scorer with 25 points. On the other side of the court, Greta SZAKMARY claimed 19. It's already known that from Pool C, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan and Croatia will continue their EuroVolley campaign.

Day 6 Recap

Play

"It was a big battle between the two team in front of their fans. That was really great. At least we took 3 points, this is so important for us. From tomorrow on we start preparing for the next match, we have to give our best."

Jan De Brandt, head coach of Hungary:

"We were fully concentrated at every point, but we made too many mistakes today. It was a decisive factor."

Zsófia GYIMES, middle-blocker of Hungary:

"We had the fire, we gave everything what we had. Unfortunately, it was enough only for a tight game."
