Match Report

Italy qualified for the semi finals - over powered Russia in four sets

Article

Both teams seemed shaken by the importance and played with tension in the first set. Russia took the command, mainly thanks to strong attacks from Goncharova. Russia was in the lead the entire first set up till 18 -18 when Italy took the first contact and manage to stress Russia to some mistakes but ended up as winner of the set.
In second set it was the other way around. Italy started with a bang but Russia had contact already at 6-6 and followed up until 13-13. A powerful attack by Margarita Kurylo Russians tied up 18 -18. Paola Egonu gave the Italians set ball and Indre Sorokaite ended the second set with an ace 25-22. Third set was a big battle between the two teams and Italy did some great saves and two spectacular blocks in a row ending up as winner 27 - 25. In fourth set Russia seemed to be in advantage but 2 blocks in crucial moment of set four, one on Goncharova, one on Parubets was to much for Russia who never recovered. And Italy can celebrate the ticket to the semi finals in Ankara. Italy will face Serbia in the semi finals.

"It was a crazy game, we had to chase Russia in every set so all of us had to step up as a team and play the highest level. We came back to Łódź from Bratislava fully focused, we knew we will need to take risks. In order to play our best volleyball we had to stick together in defense, trust each other in ofense and don't loose the concentration. We are going to Ankara!"

Italian Coach Davide MAZZANTI celebrates after the final point

"Quarter final game is a completely different story than 1/8 or any Pool stage match. We wanted to please our Russian fans in the arena and the ones rooting for us back in Russia, the pressure was big and so were the Italian attacks. They were gaining speed and due to our mistakes we made them feel comfortable. We lacked their block game, good service and consistency in attack."
