Match Report

Montenegro defeat Greece to win Pool F

Article

The tournament in Podgorica was completed with a big success for the team Montenegro as by earning a straight-set victory over Greece in the last match of Pool F, they became the winners of Pool F grabbing a spot in the #EuroVolleyM 2021, what also Greece did. Both teams entered the court very motivated, but after a tight opening, the hosts ran away with a first set. Ivan Zvicer delivered as many as six points in the opener. In the second part Greece improved their reception visible, but they were far from playing flawless and their own mistakes were crucial in this part. The Greek team committed 11 errors, once Montenegro only 5. The third and decisive set delivered a fierce battle, although Montenegro gained 24-20 lead, Greece managed to deny three match points. Then, coach Veljko Basic called a time-out which resulted with Athanasios ROTOPSALTIS serving in the middle of the net what gave Montenegro a match win. Vojin Cacic (MNE) was the best scorer with 15 points, one less tallied Aleksandar Minic (MNE) and Athanasios Protopsaltis (GRE). Both Montenegro and Greece qualified to the EuroVolley 2021 - Final Round.

"I'm very happy because of my players and because we are first in our group. This is very good for continuation of our team. I put three news players to our six. It means that with this team we have perspectives and future. "

Veljko Bašić
head coach of Montenegro

"We finished first in our group. I think nobody expected three-zero win against Greece, because they are very good team. They played very good, but today it was our day. I'm very happy that we are going to the European Championship from first place in the standings."

Vojin Ćaćić
player of Montenegro

"Team Montenegro played better today. Our attack didn't work like we wanted. Montenegro won, but I think we are also happy, because we qualified to the European Championship."
