Overview

In the second match of Day 3 in Pool C, the Netherlands will play against North Macedonia. The Netherlands, a EuroVolley veteran with 27 tournaments in the books and a gold medal to their name from the 1997 edition, are the favourites of this fixture, at least on paper. Fun fact: Dutch star opposite Nimir Abdel-Aziz started his career as a setter, and switched position to attacker only a few years ago.

Match Report

The Netherlands defeated North Macedonia

Article

North-Macedonia played with a smile on their face, and a small but loud fan group from North-Macedonia kept the atmosphere at Hakametsä Arena high through-out the game. After a slow start, the Netherlands' experience and game routine was adamant in the first set.

The Dutch took the set win 25-20.The beginning of second set was again rather even. North-Macedonia took the lead at 14-15, but that's when the Dutch team got their act together and embarked the journey towards set win. Dutch opposite Wouter Ter Maat finished second set 25 - 18 with an impressive backrow spike.

The third set followed a fairly similar pattern as the first two. Despite North Makedonia's valiant efforts, the Netherlands ruled the net with total 13 blocks and wider material - Ter Maat 20 points. North-Macedonia's top scorer was opposite Nikola Gjorgiev with 13 points.

Final set 25 - 22 and match to The Netherlands 3 - 0.

“Two 3-0 wins is definitely a great start for us in this tournament, especially since you can regard both Spain and North Macedonia as very dangerous opponents. I think that compared to other teams, the level of the players of our team is even, so it does not make too much of a difference who plays and who does not – we are a good team anyway. It is difficult to say how far we can get in this tournament – we have to get out of the pool and see who we would play in the next round.”
