Overview

Day 4 in Pool C starts in Tampere with the host Finland playing against Spain. Spain is still hunting for their first win, but Finland will settle for no less either in front of their home crowd. Can Finland keep up the strong blocking game (18 blocks in first match) against Spanish Alvaro Gimeno Rubio? Finnish opposite Urpo Sivula needs to succeed as in the previous game. The game is expected to be an even battle of two teams both eager to qualify for the knock-out phase.

Match Report

Finland wins at home against Spain

Article 4 September 2021

Before the match, Finnish setter Mikko Esko was awarded for his impressive career with 300 national team matches. Esko, 43 years old, started his national team career already in 2000.

The first set started as an even battle, but soon Finland escaped to 6-13 lead in front of a full Hakametsä Arena. Spain's time-out at 8-15 cheered the team and they were able to decrease the point gap to 15-18. That was not enough, and Finns took the set 19 - 25. Expecially Finnish middle blocker Tommi Siirilä came strong with 8 points.

Fast start from Spain with 3-1, but Finland got their act together and forced Spain on a time-out at 5-8. The set progressed evenly with both teams giving their all. Finland took 15-18 lead with Urpo Sivula's impressive attacks. Time-out for Spain at 18-21 didn't help, and Finland won 20 - 25 with Eemi Tervaportti's second touch spike ending the set.Finland attacked from a wide range, which brought challenges to Spain's block and defence. Even time-outs for Spain in 7 - 11 and 10 - 16 couldn't restart the mediterranians' game, and Finland kept their routine strong and finished the set 18 - 25.

Four Finnish players scored over 11 points; Sivula, Ronkainen, Mäkinen and Siirilä, while Spain would have needed more scorers in addition to Villena's 14 points.

“This is a fabulous start to the tournament for us with two wins from two matches. These are two big wins – and now the pressure on us has somehow dropped. I think today’s performance was even better than in our previous game with North Macedonia earlier this week. Therefore, the perspectives for us look good now in this pool. It really feels amazing to be playing in front of such a crowd – especially because it has been so long since the last time we could enjoy the support of our fans.”
