Spain VS Russia: a tough match is announced

Sixth day of EuroVolley in in Pool C starts when Spain plays against Russia. After a slow start and defeat to Turkey, the Tokyo silver medalist Russia has been impossible to beat. Expecially Egor Kliuka has been the key player and he has adjusted to the opposite role extreme well, eventhough his regular position is outside hitter. Spain got their first victory yesterday from North-Macedonia, but Andres Jesus Villena will need all the support from his team mates to be able to surprise Russia.

Match Report

SPAIN v RUSSIA

Article

Spain started with two succesful hits from the middle, but after that Russia's hard serve made middle play almost impossible. Andres Jesus Villena blocked Dmitri Volkov alone and tied the set at 9 - 9. This set the Spanish team on fire and forced Russia on a time-out at 11 - 9. Villena served an ace at 15 - 11. Russia gathered their rows and got 5 consecutive points (ace, three blocks and opponent error) and turned the situation 19 - 23. Iakovlev ended the set from the middle.

Spain was not going to give up and got a flash start. Russians tried to come up with new moves on time-out at 8 - 4 and 14 - 8. This helped, and Spain took time-out at 16 - 12 to calm their nerves. Ramon Ferragut was the character of the set with 8 points and led the team to victory 25 - 20.

Russians attacked effectively from all positions in third set. Time-outs at 6 -10 and 14 - 19 for Spain couldn't turn the tables and Russians cruised to set victory 16 - 25 with Egor Kliuka's strong performance with 6 points.

In fourth set Russia had a few point lead from the start. The closest Spain was able to get was one point difference. Kliukas's ace forced Spain for time out at 10 - 17 . Russia gave rest for some the starting six players and calmed the team on a timeout at 16 - 23. Outside hitter Fedor Voronkov presented himself well after entering the court in third set. Set to Russia 17 - 25 and game 1 - 3. Kliuka was yet again the top scorer (27 points) with good support from Volkov (16 points). Villena tallied 14 points, but his light was dimmed by several mistakes (14 / +1).

“It was a special match for me, my first in the starting six in a long time – therefore I am happy with the opportunity and the way we worked together with my team. I have to congratulate Spain – as they succeeded in everything they did in the second set, before we came back and played strong in the third and fourth. It is difficult to play EuroVolley right after the Olympics, because all the top European teams are here – but we have prepared well and our aim remains to finish first in the end.”
