Match Report

Russia's strong serve lead them to 3 -0 victory even though resting some of starting six players

Article 8 September 2021

In the last game of pool phase, Russia gave a few of their usual starting six players (opposite Kliuka, setter Kobzar, middle player Iakovlev) some much needed rest for the upcoming EuroVolley playoffs. North-Macedonia was able to play free of all pressure and give their all since the underdog was still hunting for first win.The match started evenly and North-Macedonia tied 5 - 5 with two aces from Aleksander Ljaftov. However from that point on, Russia's attack game started to roll. Time-outs for North-Macedonia at 13 - 8 and 18 - 9 couldn't turn the direction of the set, and Russians strolled to set victory 25 - 15. Opposite Kirill Klets entered the court well with 5 points.

Russians claimed an early 7-3 lead in the second set, which forced North-Macedonia to call a time-out. Other time-out was held at 17 - 11. Russia's strong serve ( 6 aces) was an important weapon through-out the set and Yaroslav Podlesnykh also ended the set 13 - 25 with an ace.

Third set followed the same pattern as two previous ones, and Russia continued to dominate. Especially middle blockers Ilia Vlasov (10 points) and Artem Volvich (12 points) showed impressive moves when given the chance. Besides Nikola Gjorgiev (9 points), North-Macedonian's couldn't find their way past tall Russian block. Set to Russia 25 - 18 and match 3 - 0.

Russia continues their EuroVolley campaign in Katowice, Poland.

“I think that we have been playing better and better with each match. Unfortunately, we failed in our opening game with Turkey but after that setback, we were able to regroup and find back our rhythm. It is obviously challenging to play a European Championship shortly after the Olympics where we definitely reached our peak – however, it is an interesting experience as well to see how much we can progress even under these conditions.”
