Day 5 in Pool D will be kicked off with a matchup between Estonia and Germany, a fixture that, to the delight of the home crowds, is supposed to bring a great intrigue.

In their only match played so far, Germany performed confidently and took a 3-0 win over Croatia.

Estonia started the tournament with a shocking 1-3 loss to Latvia. However, the players around head coach Cerdic Enard managed to come back and claim an emotional 3'2 win over Slovakia. The co-hosts of #EuroVolleyM are hoping to put up a good fight against Germany, counting on the help of more than 4000 supporters at Saku Suurhall.

Germany win in front of 5.000 against Estonia

Article

After yesterday’s inspired 3-2 win against Slovakia, Estonia were hoping to please the home crowds again in today’s match against Germany in front of 5.000 spectators. One of the pool favorites, Germany left the hosts disappointed, claiming a confident win in straight sets.

Teams started off showing a rather equal performance in the first set, with neither side taking more than a two-points lead. Great play on both defence and offence brought Estonia to a 15-12 lead. Nevertheless, the favorites tied the score and supported by Christian Fromm’s great attacks (seven points, 70%) managed to emerge victorious in the first set.

Estonia were weaponless against Germany’s good serve in the second one, with both Krage and Grozer acing two times, and Schott adding one more. This, together with the outstanding defence play and good performance of the attacking duo Grozer and Fromm brought Germany to a 25-16 set-win.

In the third set, the teams were performing equally until the middle of the set. With a good play on the service, and overall better performance thanks to sharp attacks of  Grozer (six points, 67%) Germany steadily gained advantage to eventually claim the victory.

“We are going step-by-step, finding our game but today we did really well. It was also great to play in front of the crowd after a long time, I really enjoyed it!”

“We tried to fight but perhaps our energy level today was not where it needed to be in order for us to keep up with teams like Germany until the very end. They were just too strong for us today.”
