While two leaders France and Germany can feel comfortable at the top of Pool D, the remaining four teams keep fighting for their survival in the competition. Today’s second match in the group between Estonia and Croatia is crucial for both teams, hoping to qualify for the playoffs. Estonia have quite some things to celebrate already before the match – their lead attacker in this tournament Oliver Venno will represent the national team for the 200th time today. Team’s middle blocker Andri Aganits, on the other hand, is celebrating his 28th birthday. With the support of their home crowd, team Estonia is hoping to give the fans a reason to party after the match as well.

Match Report

Croatia important victory vs home team Estonia

Article 7 September 2021

With a dramatic 2-3 loss to Croatia, Estonia has virtually eliminated their chances of progressing to the playoffs, while Croatia has now risen from the bottom of the pool and is well in the running for the next stage of the tournament. Ivan Raic top-scored for Croatia with 16 attack points, three blocks and one ace. Estonia's Renee Teppan put up a great performance, tallying a total of 29 points.

Estonia dominated in the first set, demonstrating confidence in all elements. With 74% reception, 62% attack and two blocks the team got a 25-20 win.

The hosting team started ahead in the second set as well, quickly seizing a 10-4 lead. Croatia, however, was not ready to surrender and evened out the score to 11-11. Still, an outstanding performance by Renee Teppan with nine points scored Estonia 25-22 win of the set.

With their backs against the wall, Croatia delivered an inspired performance and some incredible defence moves got them ahead at 18-13, which was enough to take the set 25-18.

Fourth set was a close call. Neither of the teams took a significant lead until the very end. At essential moments, Croatia put in their best efforts to continue the game and succeeded with a 26-24 win of the set. Ivan Raic and Marko Sedlacek contributed with seven and six points respectively.

Estonia hit a rocky start in the decisive set and were unable to find their rhythm until the end. Meanwhile Croatia were unstoppable on attack (73%) and ended the rollercoaster game with a 15-9 win of the set.

“It was a pleasure to play today in this beautiful hall and in front of these people, the fans are amazing here. It is one of the games that you will remember in your life. We were behind 0-2, but we showed character and came back. It was a nice game, and the most important thing is that we won”.

Ivan Raic
Spiker of Croatia

“This is very-very hard to take, especially here, in front of these fans. But Croatia deserved this win, they were able to change the course of the game in the third set.”

Cedric Enard
Coach of Estnia
