Haak show in Pool B: Sweden with straight-sets victory over Ukraine

Article

Sweden recorded an important victory over Ukraine, and after two days of play in the #EuroVolleyW Qualifier in Matosinhos are currently topping the charts in Pool B. Isabelle Haak, with her 27 points, became one of the keys to the success for her Sweden, as the Swedish team finished with 49 winning spikes. Another element that helped them a lot to seize the 3-0 victory, was the better performance on the serving line (7 aces). Ukraine, led by Vladimir Orlov, put up some real fight, especially in the first set, but lacked concentration in the most important moments afterwards.

  • The first set of the battle between Sweden and Ukraine set the tone for an exciting match ahead, with both teams breathing down each other's necks. Thi players around Vladimir Orlov took the lead after some succesful actions on the block, but Sweden responded quickly with sharp and precise attacks. Nadiia Kodola of Ukraine was contributing the most for her team's good performance in these minutes, but the Swedish star Isabelle Haak was giving her best, too. After a close call in the last minutes of the set, Sweden found the right way and emerged victorious.
  • Motivated, Haak&co entered the next set ready to show their best, leading 5-0 (with 3 kill blocks in these minutes). They continued outperforming Ukraine who were struggling to respond to the strong attacks by the sisters Haak. The players coached by Ettore Guidetti controlled the game and took the 2-0 lead with no big problems.
  • The players around Orlov seemed to have got back on track in the third set. However, Sweden weren't ready to let any big surprises happen. They tied to score but Ukraine fought back for 15-12 in their favour. Kodola and her teammates lacked concentration in the decisive moments toward the 20th point, and let some unforced errors affect the score. Isabelle Haak, on the other hand, showed why she is one of the leaders in the team, taking responsability to finish the important balls.
  • Haak, who shined throughout the match, recorded 27 points, and became the top scorer of the match. Alexandra Lazic contributed with 13 points for her team's victory. Sweden finished with 55% efficiency on the winning spikes.
  • For Ukraine, Nadiia Kodola scored 11 times.
