Match Report

The Netherlands are first to reach the #EuroVolleyW Quarter Finals

Article 28 August 2021

The Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in the first Eight Final match at #EuroVolleyW 2021 and made it to the next tournament stage. To know their opponent in the quarterfinals Dutch should wait until the end of the second game for the day in Kolodruma Sport Hall in Plovdiv which faces the co-hosts Bulgaria and Sweden.

⦁ Despite the competitive start, The Netherlands gradually took a 4-points lead (11-7). Since the set kept going the same way, coach Felix Koslowski put in play the backup setter Pia Kastner which brought a positive impact on Germany, and 3 points were immediately caught up (21-20). Still, Dutch managed to stay focused in the crucial moments finished the set in their favor performing better on block - 3 stops at the net, 2 of which by Juliet Lohuis.

⦁ With 3 more kill blocks, The Netherlands kept dominating at the net but Germany pushed hard from the service line (3 aces by Camila Weitzel) to put in trouble the opponent's receivers whose positive reception rate decreased to 33%. The team of Koslowski was better in attack as well and with 17 winning spikes against 13 Dutch ones came back in the match.

⦁ Led by their captain Anne Buijs who recorded 9 more points to her name in the third set, the Lionesses got closer to the Quarter Final showing excellence on most of the components.

⦁ After the break, the Dutch captain kept being unstoppable and together with Nika Daalderop were the leaders on the court adding 8 and 5 points respectively. However, Germany improved on block and was a step away to make it to the tiebreak saving 2 match-points. In the end, the set was decided by a net-fault which sent The Netherlands to the next stage.

⦁ Anne Buijs was the top scorer of the match with 28 points followed by her teammate Nika Daalderop and Louisa Lippmann from Germany both finished with 22.

"It's always difficult to play against Germany as they are a team that fights a lot. When you win one set, it doesn't mean that you will win the next one. I am really happy that we fought hard and got the victory. It will be really tough to play in front of the Bulgarian crowd in case we face them in the next stage but we do not have preferences. It will be a nice challenge to face both of the teams."

Nika Daalderop
Otside spiker, The Netherlands

“The Dutch team definitely played better on block and defense than us. That was the key in the end for the win. It’s super hard for us to leave the tournament, we’re sad. Overall I think we did a great job. We are disappointed about today’s match but we have room for further improvement. We learned a lot and we’ll come back stronger.”
