Match Report

Straight-set victory for Turkey

Article

The 2nd match of the day in Cluj-Napoca highlights the duel between group favourites Turkey and team Finland. Finland, which have failed to win so far, faced the impossible task of beating ``the Sultans of the net``. After a surprisingly good start on the first set where they led by a few points, Finland lost their rhythm and Turkey regained their favourite status in impressive fashion. Their setter has been in impressive form, setting up play for Karakurt and Gunes, who simply dominated the offence. Finland couldn’t respond in any manner to Turkey’s attacks and the first set was adjudicated easily by the Turks.
In the second set, Turkey’s defence has been just fantastic, leading the game with 6 blocks. In the attack, Finland has hit the point of no return, having no chance to turn the game around. After several incredible spikes by team TUR, the second set has come to closure with 25-12 on the scoreboard. The third set has continued in the same fashion, with team Turkey showing the most entertaining volleyball so far. Fantastic job on the attack and several great rallies have transformed set number 3 into a spectacle. Turkey won and maintained its impeccable record: 4 wins out of 4 games.

From team Turkey, captain Eda Erdem told us: "I believe my younger teammates have taken their chances pretty well up until now. They are hungry for performance and we need everyone because this will be a very long tournament. We have a great team spirit right now. Against the Netherlands, we will play our best volleyball and we’ll see what we can get."

After the match, the youngster (19) PENTTILÄ Laura declared that "it was very exciting for me to play against Turkey, I was very nervous. Tomorrow, we will give everything we got against Romania, that is for sure. It’s going to be a great match."
