Match Report

The Netherlands overpass Estonia

Article 27 August 2019

The encounter between the top ranked and the last team in Pool C brought several fierce points and unexpected plot twists. The beginning of match was a point-by-point race till 5-5, then the Netherlands managed to jump out to 11-6, but this didn't discourage Estonian rookie, which tied at 12-12. However, the Dutch side dominated in attack (58% of efficiency) what made a crucial difference and eventually let them close this part 25-18.

At the beginning of next set, surprisingly Estonia were on the lead 5-3, but then with great serve from Juliet LOHUIS, the Netherlands caught up the score and gained a few-point advantage (8-5). The Estonians tried their best, but the silver medalists from 2017 ran away with the score taking the set 25-12. The last part, the third set The Netherlands totally outspiked their rivals and won the game in 60 minutes, staying unbeaten in Pool C with four straight-set wins. Nika DAALDEROP (NED) was the best scorer of the match with 18 points, being followed by her teammate Juliet LOHUIS who had 11 points and 6 aces!

On the other side of the court Kertu LAAK and Eliise HOLLAS got 7 points each. The Dutch captain Maret BALKESTEIN-GROTHUES who suffered an ankle injury yesterday, was not in the roster for the game against Estonia, however it's highly probably that she will be able to compete in next EuroVolley phases.

Day 5 Recap

Play

"I want to say thanks to the fans, they bring lot of energy into the gym and for the team. The Estonian team fought very hard. Maret will be OK, I don't know when but she will play in this tournament some point."

Jamie MORRISON
head coach of the Netherlands

Nicole KOOLHAAS, middle-blocker of the Netherlands:

"In the first set we had some troubles. We knew that we are the ones who have to set the level of the game and we had a little trouble with this, so as soon as we started play better, it went fluently. We talked about it (the mistakes in the openings) during the time-out, we
said okay, we made a little bit too many mistakes now and if we clean this up we will get easier."

"Our opponent showed their class, but we didn't have pressure on our shoulders, so we just tried to focus on our play. The scoreboard shows the real gap between the two sides, but we aren't disappointed, because we did our best against a really strong team."

Eliise HOLLAS
middle-blocker of Estonia

Andrei OJAMETS, head coach of Estonia:

"Who knows, maybe this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for some of the girls to play against world-class players, so I tried to rotate and give the chance for the young players. In the first set we surprised the Dutch team with our service and reception, but then we became less confident and our decisions were too simple. They have a wider selection of players, so they could easily won the last two sets, but we played with our heart until the last rally."
