Overview

The fourth day of EuroVolley Group D in Cluj-Napoca starts with Finland against Ukraine. This is the third match for both teams, who are yet to win any game during the current competition. While Finland has dramatically lost their opener against Sweden, team Ukraine has not won any set so far, having faced Group D favourites Turkey and Netherlands. Ukraine's secret weapon will be Olesia Rhykliuk, who put on some impressive displays in the previous two encounters. Team Finland will be looking to open up play for Anna Czakan and Piia Korhonen, who can get them the first win of the tournament.

Match Report

Ukraine wins the match against Finland

Article

The first match of the day between Ukraine and Finland started in style. There was nothing between the two teams in the first few minutes of the game, but as the first set progressed, Ukraine’s defensive work was impressive, with the team leading in killer blocks. The first set ended 19-25, with Ukraine taking an early lead. In the second set however, Finland’s offense started to dominate the net, while also getting some aces on the serve. Finland has finally taken the lead, but only for a short time, as after the timeout Ukraine changed the system and turned the game around. A dramatic challenge turned the tide of the game as a set point for Finland got challenged and turned into a set point for Ukraine, who took advantage. The third set of the game has been a real rollercoaster. After the break, Finland found their rhythm and attacked vigorously to shake the Ukrainian defensive system. Tension mounted as the set went forward, with several errors on the Ukrainian team allowing the Finnish to get 4 points clear. After a change in the system, Ukraine pushed the set and equalized. Finland dramatically won the third set and pushed the game into a fourth. In the fourth set, teams went head-to-head up until the 10 point mark.

After the match, Ukraine captain  Nadiia Kodola said: "this first win was great for us, we fought really hard, for us the tournament just started. Against Romania it will be tough as they will have home fans, but I can’t wait to play with fans in the stands so it will be great".

From Finland, Riikilä Emmi told us: "Ukraine was so good tonight, although we did our best. Our defence improved during the match, but unfortunately we did not manage to win another set to get the game into a decisive set. We will take every set one at a time now and see what happens."
